OUGD103 - InDesign Workshop

Page size: The printed trimmed size of whatever you are going to produce.
Columns, margins and the bleed/slug are used as guides and don't affect the print itself.

Any element which extends to the edge should bleed off the page - for example, a full page image/coloured image. A standard bleed amount is 3mm. A slug is an area outside the page which is still printed onto the paper - elements such as registration marks, trim marks, colour swatches etc. If the outcome is a book/booklet, the 'Facing Pages' check box needs to be highlighted - this is because pages face each other in book form.

The red outline indicated the bleed area and the purple frames indicate the 3 columns.

Using the brief specifications.

The page can be split into two pages using a guide.

Once creating a text frame box, you are then able to fill it with placeholder/dummy text to see how text would form in the layout. This can then be altered and then substituted with the correct text but for the meantime, it is an indicator to how the final outcome will look.

The red icon (above) allows you to carry text from one text frame to another to form the following:

I added different text frames to form headers/call-out text etc. The rectangle frame tool allows you to add a frame where images will be placed. For images, resolution - 300 dpi, file format - .tiff/.psd/.ai and colour mode - CMYK or greyscale.

An image is then imported by going to File > Place. I then altered the colour of the headings and call out text to spot colours from the image.
