Good is...? Group crit

Comment on the extend to which the research and development of the presented briefs demontrates a significant understanding of the chosen subject matter/problem.

1) Extensive research which has been demonstrated on the blog and a developed understanding of what nostalgia 'means' to people.

2) Large amount of relevant contextual study which is leading to a well crafted project.

Comment on the extent to which the work presented/proposed exploits the practical and conceptual potential of the brief.

1) The pack idea exploits design for print well

2) Lots of work, maybe investigate some colour

Comment on the proposed range of products/deliverables/media/formats to be produced in response to clearly identified problems/briefs

1) Consider promotion as an extension to Design for Print - Point f sales? Poster promoting the concept of nostalgia to make people think

2) Interesting idea, not sure at the moment what sort of environment the pack would be found in.

Additional comments

1) N/A

2) Realistically the project is coming along fine, there are no massively obvious adjustments that need making, keep going in this direction and it should be a good project. Start investigating stock, colour and print finishes.

Action plan

  • Which stock, print finishes, colours?
  • More visible potential resolutions - What exactly is going inside the box?
  • For a bit of extra research, look at 'you nostalgia, you lose' thread on the internet (link provided)

Response

I need to clarify exactly I will create, what will be inside the nostalgia pack and and where the products can be found. In terms of nostalgic medicine, it is unable to be sold as a corporate product/range due to the fictional nature of nostalgia itself - this therefore needs to be a novelty gift with an aspect of humour whilst still promoting the idea that nostalgia can provide a break from reality.

I also need to look at stock considerations, print finishes and begin experimenting with colour. To expand my body of work, I will need to design and experiment more, not just using the computer.

Good is...? Information booklet

These are to be included in the nostalgia pack with each sense to provide insight into how we process each sense. Just initial design ideas at the moment to show in the crit tomorrow, simply to give insight into what I will create. I used the icons I previously designed and arranged them in a way to show enough detail whilst still overlapping the egde of the page in order to provide more negative space for the text.

Good is...? Packaging development

Pharmaceutical packaging

Alongside the nostalgia pack, I want to devise a range of nostalgia pharmaceutical packaging containing items such as, for the majority, sweets from our childhood. I will use conventions typical of medicinal packaging to give the impression to the recipient they are buying something which will aid and help them in some way.

Nostalgia pack

In addition to (this) post, I decided to experiment further with other design ideas. I looked primarily at segmented packaging as I still want to include 5 objects relating to each sense therefore I want these to look uniform.

The following is based on the first aid "+" symbol. After looking for inspiration, I found an existing packaging design based on this imagery. I noticed, however, that this could be split into 5 secions, all of   equal size (that is if the dimensions are the same throughout). A lid could be lifted upwards, revealing the contents underneath.

Good is...? Deciding what contents to include

In the progress surgery, it was suggested that I create one pack from the range and propose the rest. Although I would like to create more than one, I decided to focus on just the one for the meantime. As I was born in 1992 and have more knowledge on this era, I settled with the 90s. Based on the research I collated combined with the questionnaire, I looked at as many responses to each sense as possible which could form the contents of my nostalgia pack.

Good is...? Icon development

Icons for the 5 senses to be applied to content packaging in the nostalgia pack. I used inspiration from the icons I collated from existing sources. I used a 4px stroke throughout, simply as a starting point.

Taste: Rather than using a mouth to envision taste (as this can be confused with speech), I decided to use a tongue instead. The tongue shape comprised simply of a rectangle and a circle which was then outlined. Two additional lines were added either side to give the impression the tongue was sticking out.

Touch: The hand uses 5 simple shapes - 5 rounded rectangles and a circle. 4 lines were then added to highlight the edge of the fingers. I also looked at reducing the icon to just one finger to further the simplicity but decided the hand was more effective and easier to distinguish.

Hearing: Rather than creating a detailed, ear imagery, I began with just the outline. I then added detail to match the aesthetics of the other icons. This was simply created (roughly) with the pen tool and then altered slightly to create a smoother curve.

Thought I'd create a face...
