OUGD301 - Evaluation

OUGD301 - Module submission form & bibliography

Brief 5 - Food perception

Brief 5 - Poster designs

To extend the range, I decided to create a set of abstract but informative poster designs informed by the layouts within the publication. I already had a few ideas which originated from the colour publication but created another for the 'Appearance' section with the Delboeuf illusion, as featured below. I then mocked these up for module submission:

Brief 5 - Final photos

With a makeshift studio (2 white pieces of paper), I took several photos of the publication and packaging design to use within my boards. The colour balance isn't correct but this can easily be altered in Photoshop. I am really pleased with the end result, especially considering the time frame. These are just some of the photos I took —

Brief 5 - Production

After experimenting with different layout designs and finally reaching a set idea on how I envision the publication to look, I began sourcing all the relevant material. Some of the pages featured different foils (particularly white) and each page was a different colour and included some form of interaction. The white foil came out surprisingly well (on the black cover stock) but not so well on the inside coloured pages.

From the content I sourced, an interesting fact was that if you intend on eating more green vegetables, it is best to eat them from a green plate as a lower contrast between the food and what you're eating from tricks your mind into thinking you are eating less than what you actually are. I therefore wanted the format to showcase this and planned on using green foil on green stock but as you can see, it didn't turn out as good as I hoped. Instead I will simply use a green ink.

Once I had all the pages ready and set, I then began to perfect bind the publication. I stacked and bound all the content pages before adding the black outer cover and subsequently trimmed to ensure a flush edge.

To package the publications, I envisioned creating an open box (much like the project featured here). I experimented with a thin grey stock but the weight was far too light — I preferably need a more weightier stock for the final resolution.

Brief 5 - Layout

Based on my initial layout exploration, I began to mock up the design — the colour signifies the coloured stock it will be printed on. Again, I used Avenir STD Medium to keep the aesthetic consistent throughout. I used a 6 column grid to ensure further consistency but to also provide a grid that can interchange and is easily adaptable.

Brief 5 - Development

As I intend on creating 3 publications, each focusing on a different aspect of food, I thought it would be useful to give each of them a sense of identity. The project is derived from a type brief so I believed it to be fitting to express this solely through type — I thought about conveying each (Appearance, colour and texture) through weights and styles of the chosen font, Avenir.

Appearance
Avenir LT STD 95 Black
I needed the weight to create as much visual impact as possible, hence the heavy style.

Colour —
Avenir LT STD 45 Book
This needed to be minimal in form to allow the colour of the publication to "do the talking"

Texture —
Avenir LT STD 45 Book
The oblique styling adds a varied twist to the norm, showcasing a different 'texture' (style)

Brief 5 - Initial development

After choosing the brief and knowing I wanted to look into publication design, I decided to create a set of informative and engaging publications. The brief outlined that the content must inform and / or educate. I chose to explore cognitive senses of food other than the taste itself — this included the colour, the appearance / form and the texture.

I am initially focusing on the colour publication and wanted to explore stock formats and colour combinations. I began looking at initial layout designs including the cover and various possibilities for the content itself.

Logo? / Wordmark

I then looked at a few typefaces to see which could be used for the copy within the publication. Although I liked the serif fonts, I thought it was more fitting to use a sans-serif to ensure a more contemporary aesthetic.

I ultimately chose Avenir due to its versatility within its weights and clean and geometric form. I incorporated an em dash within the (sort of) identity to reinforce this versatility. Em dashes are typically used to denote a break in thought so decided this would be useful to use within the titles of the different publications.

I then started to look at various cover ideas —

Brief 5 (competition) - Food for thought

I found a 2012 ISTD brief entitled "Food for thought?" which simply outlined to 'Investigate food'. Despite how vague the brief is, I thought it would be an engaging and interesting brief to develop further. As this brief had a quick turn around, I immediately had to generate an idea and concept behind my resolution. I decided to set upon the idea of cognitive response to food i.e. taste, sight, touch etc.
