OUGD204 - Type session

I wasn't in last week but asked the others what we needed to create for the next session. We are required to fit a body of text amounting to around 5000 words in an 8 page, A5 booklet, focusing primarily on readability and legibility. I first read the essay in the order to gain insight into the content, message and what it is ultimately intending to communicate.

I initially decided to use a structured layout formation using 3 columns with a 3mm gutter to increase space availability. To give a balanced aesthetic with plenty of white space to engage the reader, I positioned the text in just 2 of the 3 columns. This was also to allow various pull out / call out quotes which supported the essay.

Final selection

Cambria - 8 on 10pt
2 columns, 54mm width, 3mm gutter
Margins - 18mm (L & R), 10mm (T & B)

YCN - Note to self

How do we target office workers through online advertising? Social media
Advertisements outside business complexes?
Possible app to 'order on the go' - simple user interface
Incentive to recycle the box after use? Or another use for the box itself?

YCN - Graze - Their new approach

Just checked out their website for more research and discovered they have begun to incorporate type illustrations alongside their product range, as seen below. Upon first looking at the Graze website, we noticed that although they promote the fact their products are hand-made and 'hand picked', there was no evidence of this. However, they have uploaded a video showcasing how the baker bakes their bread.

Although these titles look fairly uniform, using a distinct & illustrative style, their entire brand aesthetic still seems inconsistent. The video can also be found below.

YCN - Crit feedback

We came up with the following questions to put to the group about or project.

1. Is our design direction appropriate to the target audience?
2. Does the box work better portrait or landscape?
3. Does it solve the problem of the mis-matched branding?

Our Feedback was:

Problem Analysis

- The problems have been thought out well...conveying the tone of voice of Graze. Nailing down the target audience will be hard with box restrictions, push it as far as you can.
- Would it suit the target audience.
- Branding needs to be more consistent.
- Booklet should have positives of Graze specific food, the benefits.

Conceptual Development

- Solid range of development, stripping back Graze branding would be the right approach, clean design and approach to colours.
- Industrial could result in the right ideology for the company.
- Broad range of research done. -Really like the icons and the idea of simplifying the branding.
- Ask target audience what they want from the box, find out what they want to know most of all.
- Calorie value, fat, price ect, needs to be communicated on the box.

Design Proposal

- Thinking about costing is a good approach, companies always need to lower their overheads.
- Changing box ratio might give a fresh perspective.
- Simplify the approach will appeal to the average man, less innocent smoothie, more healthy, high end.

Action Plan

- Begin to make icons, then see how far we can strip them back before they are unrecognisable, this will give us the most simplistic forms to work with.
- Look at a marketing campaign, see what we can come up with.
- Begin to look at how we can apply our branding to the contents of the box, how will it work and how can we keep the branding consistent.
- Look into colour, only using a limited colour range to drive costs down, this needs to be decided on early on so we can move forward with the project.

YCN - Logo refinement

We chose several of our logo design ideas to decide which was the most effective in terms of communication, clarity and delivery. When printed out, we decided what elements worked and didn't work to then select one which we believed to be the most effective outcome.

Below is the final logo designed by Luke. We used an uppercase 'G' and a centred strap line. We decided to keep a similar composition to the existing logo to keep a sense of identity but attempted to refine and modernise the logo to make it more distinctive, as stated in the brief.
