No News is Good News - More Ideas

These are more design ideas experimenting with composition, shapes and scale as part of my development towards my final 3 designs.

Almost like a 'search' spotlight which you see in films when prisoners escape. It also highlights a certain area - the places feature displays your current whereabouts in a map therefore this design references this concept.

Similar to the previous design but with a distinct, circle spotlight.

Visual Language - Anamorphic letters

We were asked in groups to create a letter in a 3 dimension state over a series of 3 or more planes (a sequence through space). Anamorphic illusions can only be appreciated from a particular vantage point. Similarly to the channel 4 idents, we had to 'break up' a letter into several pieces and position these at certain distances apart. We first began cutting the letter 'M' directly into 4 pieces in a viewfinder to see how the process works but as each section was the same size, the scale was offset when viewed at the correct place. However, this is what we came up with:

And at a larger scale (with the last piece being held up due to lack of time):

No News is Good News - Text ideas

One of the 3 posters we had to create was to be designed solely using text and 2 chosen colours. Using the colours I chose for my places logo idea (in my previous post), I experimented with different fonts, placements and size. As the 'Places' feature pin-points to someones exact whereabouts on a map, I wanted to depict this using text. These are some ideas:

Highlight draws attention to the word 'burglars'. Also replaced 'facebook' with its actual logo. Subtle change in colour.

Whole circle pin points an exact location -  may connote the idea of whereabouts more clearly. Small text and location shows that burglars can see your exact location in a vast amount of space.

Using original  colour, made the facebook logo more clear and changed the positioning of the white highlight. Also changed the dimensions to fit the A3 2:1 dimension.

No News is Good News - Ideas

As my headline/statement centered around the new 'places' feature, I decided to use its logo as a basis of my image/image and text design. I imported the image into Illustrator and traced the important features - the pin and the map. I noticed however, that the circle in the centre of the pin could act as a lock, further enhancing how using this feature can result in a home burglary.

As the brief stated we were only allowed to use 2 colours and stock, I decided to use Facebook's corporate colours of blue and white in order to relate to the topic of the statement. Aforementioned, I then added a shape below the white circle to transform it into a lock.

Facebook's 'Places' logo.

Adapted logo using 2 colours (blue and white) and a lock.

Using white stock, I can add depth to the logo by changing the colour of the map - drawing attention to the lock imagery.

Another image based idea using the default Facebook profile picture as the main focus.

No News is Good News - Brief

The brief we got given after the initial research task was to create 3 high impact posters in A3 2:1 format that deliver a personal identified message derived from the research. They should work as a set or series and be visually consistent. One must be made solely using type, another with image and the third with both. However, we are restricted to the use of two colours plus stock therefore we need to think carefully about layout, form and colour.

It needs to be kept simple, concise and to the point as to not distract the viewer (hence the restrictions on colour). It also needs to be factual, statistical, informed and specific. I will now start exploring various ideas in relation to the statement I derived which was as follows:

"Facebook's new places feature advertises whereabouts to burglars"

The new 'places' feature allows a user to 'check in' at a nearby place to inform their friends where they are at any given time. However, this highlights a flaw in Facebook security which may alarm some users. Facebook security (or the lack of it) is an ongoing issue which has conjured many other news headlines in the past. It was reported, however, that some people updating their status on their whereabouts or when they will next be going on holiday have been exploited by burglars. This new 'places' feature will only increase the risk of these incidents happening.

Also, for the research presentation, I displayed all my information on the following sheets. I used the Facebook's corporate colour, blue for the background and any information in white text.
